Genesis

Established as a separate luxury marque in 2015, Genesis developed from Hyundai's premium saloon programme into a range of saloons, SUVs and electric vehicles.

Origins and identity

Genesis is the South Korean luxury marque established by Hyundai Motor Company in November 2015. It belongs at the manufacturer-and-marque level of automobile history: the name identifies a vehicle brand, although its corporate origins and manufacturing resources remain tied to Hyundai.

The marque must be distinguished from the Hyundai Genesis saloon, introduced in 2008. Hyundai announced the separate Genesis brand on 4 November 2015, building on that earlier premium-car programme. The second-generation Hyundai Genesis provided the basis for the G80, while the successor to Hyundai’s Equus flagship became the G90, initially named EQ900 in South Korea. The earlier Hyundai model’s introduction therefore does not establish a 2008 founding date for the separate marque. Contemporary launch report.

From saloons to a broader range

The first Genesis-branded flagship was unveiled in December 2015 as the G90, with EQ900 used in its home market. The G80 followed in 2016, and the smaller G70 joined in 2017. These three saloon lines established a hierarchy within the marque rather than successive generations of one vehicle. G90 launch documentation; manufacturer’s historical review.

Genesis expanded into SUVs with the GV80 in 2020 and introduced the GV70 that December. The Electrified G80 was presented in April 2021, extending the saloon range into battery-electric propulsion. These dates describe introductions in calendar years; they should not be treated as universal model-year designations or simultaneous on-sale dates in every country. Design and engineering

Genesis describes its design approach as ‘Athletic Elegance’, combining formal luxury-car proportions with sporting elements. The phrase appeared in the original G90 launch material; it was not a new designation introduced with the later SUV range. Subsequent vehicles developed a recognisable lighting identity, exemplified by the Quad Lamps described in the G70 Shooting Brake’s launch documentation. There is no single Genesis engine specification. The original G90 launch programme included a turbocharged 3.3-litre V6, a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre V6 and a 5.0-litre V8. Those were flagship launch specifications, not engines fitted universally across the marque or offered in every destination market. Original G90 technical description.

Electrification introduced a different engineering branch. Presented in 2021, the GV60 was the first Genesis based on the dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. Its launch range included rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. This dedicated electric model should be distinguished from the separately named Electrified G80 and Electrified GV70. Markets and body styles

Genesis began selling in the United States in 2016. Its early international expansion also included Canada, the Middle East, Russia and Australia. Market entry, local model availability and the introduction of a new vehicle are separate events. Genesis’s international expansion account.

The European programme announced in May 2021 initially targeted Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The G70 Shooting Brake illustrated the importance of regional body-style preferences: it adapted the G70 saloon into an estate with a rear hatch and additional luggage space. The European press material described turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with an eight-speed automatic transmission. These European specifications must not be replaced by specifications from a different market’s G70 saloon. European launch announcement; European Shooting Brake reference.

Manufacturing

Genesis manufacturing has its roots in South Korea, with Ulsan identified by the marque as an assembly location. Production geography should nevertheless be recorded by model and period rather than inferred solely from the brand’s nationality. Genesis manufacturing information.

On 21 February 2023, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama celebrated the launch of Electrified GV70 assembly at Montgomery. Its announcement identified this as the first Genesis assembly outside South Korea. This was a manufacturing milestone for that electric SUV, not a relocation of the entire Genesis range. The announcement establishes the historical start of this programme; it does not establish an uninterrupted production period or a production total. Alabama manufacturing announcement.

Historical significance

Genesis represents Hyundai’s development of a separate luxury identity from an existing premium-car programme. Its history encompasses both continuity—the earlier Genesis saloon and Hyundai manufacturing infrastructure—and expansion into distinct saloon, SUV and battery-electric lines. This makes the relationship between marque, model name and corporate manufacturer particularly important when cataloguing its vehicles.
